Stage Right brings Mel Brooks’ ‘The Producers’ to Crighton stage

The famous Mel Brooks’ musical “The Producers” will open its distinct sense of humor for the Crighton Theatre patrons.

The show, directed by Manny Cafeo, will run through Feb. 28.

Cafeo directed last year’s Stage Right show “Singin’ in the Rain” that took home “Best Show of the Year” and had the highest number of Montie nominations of any 2014-2015 show.

This description is from the Stage Right website:

“A down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all “little old ladies”) out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive “Springtime For Hitler”), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends.”

The show brings numerous Montie winners back to the stage and crew.

Jeff Baldwin, Max Bialystock, is a five-time Montie Award winner. In 2013, he won three Monties – one for set design and one for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy or Drama for his role in The Players Theatre Company’s “The Lion in Winter” and one for Best Lead Actor in a Musical for his role in “The King and I.” Last year, Baldwin won Best Lead Actor in a Musical and Best Overall Performance for his role in The Players Theatre Company’s “A Christmas Carol The Musical.”

Sara Preisler, Ulla, won Best Lead Actress in a Musical last year for her role in Stage Right’s “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Carolyn Wong, sound design and Hold-me, Touch-me/Shirley, won two Monties last year. One for sound design and one for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy or Drama for her role in Stage Right’s “Dixie Swim Club.” She was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role in Stage Right’s “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Adam Isbell, won Best Supporting Actor in a Musical last year for his role in Stage Right’s “Shrek the Musical.”

Craig Campobella, Judge, won two Monties last year. One for Best Actor in a Minor Role in a Comedy or Drama for his role in Stage Right’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and one for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Drama for his role in Stage Right’s “Trip to Bountiful.”

Roger Ormiston, Lighting design, is a three-time Montie Award Lighting Design nominee, including his win last year for Stage Right Production’s “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Dinah Mahlman, choreography, won last year in the same category for her work in Stage Right’s “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Denise DeBold, props and set design, is a seven-time Montie nominee and two-time winner in 2015. She won the Best Props and Best Set Decoration (now Scenic Artist) for her work in Stage Right’s “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Ana Guirola-Ladd, music direction, last won in 2015 for her work in the same category for Stage Right’s “Shrek the Musical.”
